Nature observation, and more specifically birdwatching, is a growingly popular activity. It offers many pursuits, from wildlife observation to journeys among the stars. Increasingly, binocular performance proves insufficient. That is when PENTAX spotting scopes come into play: they significantly extend the field of view, showing fine details with precision and excellent contrast.

Clear and bright field of view

The PENTAX PF-85EDA features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical elements that effectively reduce chromatic aberration and the latest multi-coating processes to drastically minimize reflectance compared to conventional models. The combination of a full multi-coating applied to all optical surfaces and a phase coating applied to the roof prism allows this spotting scope to deliver a clear field of view and high contrast for excellent-quality observations.

Compact body for perfect portability
Despite the large objective diameter (85 mm), this spotting scope is designed to be compact and portable thanks to the integration of a latest-generation roof prism. This compact design makes it comfortable to carry to an observation site and facilitates many applications: birdwatching, astronomy, nature observation, or even score monitoring in archery competitions.

Compatibility with a range of eyepieces
The eyepiece mount includes a sleeve to the U.S. standard of 31.7 mm (1.25 inch), allowing a wide choice of eyepieces, including the XF series specially designed for PENTAX spotting scopes and the new XW series ideal for astronomical observation. The user can thus choose the eyepiece best suited to a particular application.

Angled rear body
The eyepiece section is tilted upward at a 45-degree angle. The user can easily adjust the eyepiece height and observe the subject in a natural, relaxed position without having to raise the head. Long observation sessions are therefore more comfortable, allowing the user to remain seated in their chair.

All-weather construction
By integrating a dustproof glass element into the eyepiece mount, the spotting scope is designed to be waterproof (equivalent to JIS class 7, with immersion resistance to a depth of one meter), providing excellent water resistance and reliable use even in rain or mist.

Nitrogen-filled body for a clear, fog-free field of view
The interior of the scope is filled with nitrogen to prevent any fogging during sudden temperature changes. The field of view thus remains perfectly clear even in difficult weather conditions.

Optional kit version
The PF-85EDA from PENTAX is also offered in a kit version, with the SMC PENTAX ZOOM EYEPIECE 8-24MM. In addition to the many advantages of the XW series eyepieces, this eyepiece offers a variable image area with a magnification factor between 20x and 60x, corresponding to a field of view of 33m to 17m at 1000m.

Original PENTAX eyepieces
The performance of a spotting scope cannot exceed that of the eyepieces used. We therefore offer a complete range of eyepieces suited to many uses. With their practical and functional focal lengths, the XW series eyepieces provide a wide selection for all types of applications, from low-magnification star observation to high-magnification planetary observation.

High-quality optics for exceptional image quality
The optical performance of the XW series comes from lanthanum glass elements combining a high refractive index and particularly low dispersion: they create a balanced image with minimal aberrations. They were developed specifically to reduce the annoying vignetting effect by effectively compensating the pupil's spherical aberration.

Exclusive PENTAX multi-coating for remarkable light transmission
All air-contact lens surfaces are treated with PENTAX's exclusive multi-coating, while laminated surfaces receive an innovative partial coating. Light transmission thus exceeds 90 percent across the visible spectrum (96 percent at 550 nm).

Stray-light mask technology to improve image contrast
Thanks to PENTAX's advanced composition simulation technologies, the XW series employs a diaphragm positioned to most effectively block stray light, dramatically reducing internal reflections to deliver a clearer image with superior contrast.

Weather-resistant construction for all-weather use
The XW series benefits from a JIS class 4* weather-resistant design that allows use in drizzle or night dew.
* XW series eyepieces are not designed for underwater use and must not be immersed.

Universal connection threads
With the XW series, you can choose between two mounting diameters: the U.S. standard 31.7 mm version and the 50.8 mm (2-inch) version. Removing the screwed eyecup reveals a 43 mm diameter thread with a 0,75 mm pitch.
